Is it too early to have a life crisis?

Sunday, June 07, 2009

I've been freaked out by the fact I'll be thirty next year since sometime in the beginning of May. It just got me thinking about where and how I want my life plan to go and where I currently am.

I'm in a stable relationship with my husband, we have a house, a pet and I'm have a stable job. Those things I'm very grateful for but in order for things to progress in my life some things have to change.

Those who have been following me for a while know the majority of my time and energy is spent at the office. It's gotten even worse since the refi boom hit. We are working twelve or more hour days Monday through Friday - no lunches, no breaks. We start each day going full speed ahead and don't slow down until it's time to go home. Then we get to come in one day each weekend to work more.

My supervisor says it's only temporary but the projections have this pace going until December. Then once we slow down we will go back down to a skeleton crew and still have to stay until 7pm each night.

I'm no longer saying I can't do this much longer. I am now saying I won't do this much longer. In fact, I'm thinking about doing something incredibly stupid - I'm playing with the idea of cashing in my 401k and walking away.

As dumb of a decision as I would normally think it is, the thought of it leaves me with such a huge feeling of relief and hope. I feel happy and giddy and absolutely scared out of my wits at the same time.

Cory and I are going to discuss it more today. We have to do the whole debt/income, what the hell are we going to do kind of thing. If I do it I will be taking a huge pay cut so it's not something we want to take lightly, especially with the job market right now.

I feel like this is a decision that will be a turning point for the rest of my life.

If I could make one tiny suggestion, it would be to please consider how you might do this without cashing in the 401K. You won't realize just how important it is until you get to be my age. Right now, I truly, truly wish we'd started our 401K when we were your age.

*Sigh* Linda that is one of my TWO major reasons for hem-hawing. Unfortunately, with the bills we have versus the paycut I will receive if I leave that would be the only option we would have.

re: 401k, you are so young, you will be able to start a new account sooner than you think. If you need the money now to fund a major life (and stress reducing) change then DO IT! You need to realize when the time is right to bail. You never know what willhappen down the road, you may lose all access to your investments (ahem, Enron, WorldCom, etc etc) Take it now and start over. You deserve so much better than where you are right now. Love you lots,
Stacy

Life is short, you need to be happy. You are so young still. I just turned 50, lost my full time gig 2 yrs ago, economy BS!, and in school again. I am scared and wondering how I will make it, but sometimes the stress of a job can take it's toll on your mental and physical health.
Good luck in your decisions.
